Strength Training

After the age of 25 the muscles in our body begin to slowly deteriorate. In fact, it is found that between the ages of 25 and 50 we will lose 10% of our muscle mass and between the ages of 50 to 80 an additional 40% of muscle mass is lost. While some of this loss is part of the natural aging process, it is also found that inactivity is a major contributor. This is why strength training is crucial and beneficial to people of all ages. For the younger generations it helps to prevent muscle loss and maintain endurance and strength while older generations can rebuild some of the muscle that has been lost.

There are several methods used to stimulate muscle growth. Some of these methods include the use of handheld weights, exercise bands, machines, as well as using your own body weight as a form of resistance. The AHA/ACSM guidelines for strength training are as follows:

Do eight to 10 strength training exercises, eight to 12 repetitions of each exercise twice a week.

In addition to the obvious aesthetic benefits of strength training, some physiological benefits include:

  • Increasing and maintaining muscle mass

  • Increased muscle strength

  • Improved endurance and motor performance

  • Improvement of functional independence for older adults

  • Increase in bone density that can prevent fractures and osteoporosis

  • Increase in metabolism for weight loss and maintenance
