Aerobic/Cardiovascular Fitness

Aerobic activity, also known as cardiovascular activity, is performed by carrying out an activity (i.e. walking, biking, running) that increases your heart rate for a sustained amount of time. Current Amercian Heart Association (AHA)/American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines for aerobic activity of healthy adults are as follows:

Perform moderately intense cardio 30 minutes a day, five days a week or perform vigorously intense cardio for 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week.

According to the AHA/ACSM moderate-intensity physical activity means working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break a sweat, yet still being able to carry on a conversation.

Benefits of Aerobic Activity

When performed regularly, aerobic training can have profound positive effects on your overall health. Some of the benefits of consistent cardiovascular activity include:

  • Reduces the amount of "bad cholesterol" or LDL and increases the amount of "good cholesterol" or HDL in your blood

  • Reduces the risk of heart disease and prevents hypertension

  • Strengthens your heart and lunges

  • Controls your weight

  • Increases energy to better enjoy daily activities

  • Reduces stress and anxiety while increasing your sense of well-being

Aerobic training is often performed on equipment like a treadmill, stair master, stationary bicycle, elliptical machine, etc. However, there are various other means to accomplish your weekly recommended aerobic training, such as jogging, swimming, brisk walking, playing sports, etc. Our aim when designing individual programs is to empower you in the decision making process. Together, we want to determine aerobic training activities that you can do at home, in a gym setting, or on your own.
